WESTERN HUN'S KHAN DYNASTIES |
Translator's Notes |
The List of Western Hun's Khans is compiled primarily from the Djagfar Tarihi Annals, with consideration of the http://www.hostkingdom.net/siberia.html list and the preserved list http://www.omda.bg/engl/history/imennik.htm of the (Danube) Bulgarian Khans. The first column names the known and presumed supreme leaders of the confederation. The trailing columns show the suzerain splinter states in rebellion to the supreme center. Those names shown in brown, of the leaders known from the historical records, but outside of the known dynastic line, are presumed to be local autonomous and mostly peripheral leaders, whose names and links with the surrounding states were familiar to the outsiders and happened to be preserved. The table does not address the title of the suzerain. Some are clearly indicated in the name, as for Bu-Yurgan, Kan Karadjar (Kan), Kurbat, Shambat, Bat-Ugyr (Bat). The others can be assumed (Kagan, Yabgu) based on the background and position in the time and space. Thus, it is possible that Atilla's initial title was Yabgu, he was a successor of Yabgu Roila (Ruga) as the head of the western part of the empire, and that he assumed the title Kagan (dialectal Kaĝan, Kaan, Kan) after the death of his senior brother Kagan Bleda. More pretentious titles could also be used by the pretenders and splinters. Thus, the splinter Khan Asparukh is known to be called Kagan Asparukh in the records. On this site can be found some details about all the rulers listed in the table. Each of the rulers can be characterized by the major events that happened during his reign. |
