Majority of the modern Türkic people profess Islam. If not for the overt politicization of the Islam in modern times, the majority would not even have known that their Islam is Sunni Islam, the traditional division was We are Moslems, they are Shiites. The reverse picture is not symmetrical, it went We are true Moslems, they are deviant Moslems; in the Late Middle Ages the religious Shiism became equivalent with the political, but not ethnical, Persians. The politicization of religion always existed, but except for particular cases, it remained largely covert, hiding economical, political, and personal ambitions behind theological curtain.
